Blackberries are versatile electronic devices that can make phone calls, send text messages and surf the Web. Blackberries are like miniature computers, and you can download a host of applications, or apps, that can do all sorts of useful tasks. The company Unity4Life offers an app called AV Shadow, which allows you to turn your phone into a universal remote control for your television and DVD player from as far as 30 feet away. AV Shadow costs £64 as of January 2011, and covers the purchase of the app itself and a piece of equipment that will allow it to work.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Check that you have the right device and data plan for this app. The app is compatible with the BlackBerry Curve, Bold, Pearl, Storm and 8800 series. It also uses data, so you will need a data plan to avoid racking up fees.

  2. 2

Visit the Blackberry App World AV Shadow purchase page (see Resources) and click on "Purchase."

  3. 3

Sign in with your Blackberry-registered e-mail address and password, or create a new Blackberry ID.

  4. 4

Download the Blackberry App World browser plug-in if you have not already.

  5. 5

Connect your Blackberry to your computer.

  6. 6

Download the latest version of Blackberry App World to your phone.

  7. 7

Review the terms and conditions, and click "Accept."

  8. 8

Enter your payment information, and then hit "Submit." Wait for the hub to be shipped to you.

  9. 9

Plug the hub in to your video and audio equipment using the cables provided and navigate to the AV Shadow app by opening your phone's menu and going to downloaded programs. Open the app, which will open a graphic interface giving you full control of the television's volume, channel selection and any other control you would have on a remote control.
