A cell phone can do many things besides making calls if its operating system allows the functionality. You can turn the cell phone, also called a smartphone, into an IR (infrared) remote control. To do so, you must add an IR transmitter module to the phone. You can acquire this from an electronics store or the cellular supplier of the phone. You also need to install an application that can access the module. The procedure is straightforward, does not require knowledge of how a remote works and will not harm the phone or any device it is used with in any way.

  1. 1

Remove the IR transmitter module from its carrying case. Insert the headphone plug at the bottom of the module into the headphone socket on the cell phone. Typically, this will be at the top-left or top-right corner of the phone, but it can also be at a bottom corner in some cases, depending upon the phone's manufacturer.

  2. 2

Tap the "Application" or "App" store icon on the phone's screen. Enter the name of the IR transmitter module's manufacturer in the "Search" text field of the screen that appears. Tap the name of the manufacturer from the list of choices that appears beneath "Search."

  3. 3

Tap the "Install" or "Download" button on the screen that appears. Let the program download and install itself on the phone.

  4. 4

Tap the icon of the program you just installed on the phone. Turn the phone upside down if the IR transmitter module is on the bottom of the phone. Tap through any introductory or explanation screens.

  5. 5

Tap the "Setup" icon on the phone's screen. Tap the type of device--for example, a TV or a DVD player--from the list of choices presented on the screen. Select the manufacturer's name from the list of choices provided on a new screen.

  6. 6

Aim the front of the IR transmitter module toward the device that you are setting up for control. Tap the "Test" button on the screen to see whether the device turns on. If not, continue tapping the "Test" button until the device turns on. Tap the "Save" or "Done" button when the device has turned on.

  7. 7

Tap the "Setup" button on the screen and repeat the procedure with any other device that you want to control. Quit the program when you are finished. Remove the IR transmitter module from the phone's headphone socket. Return the IR transmitter module to its carrying case.
