Knowing how to use the TomTom Home application can save time when you need to update or operate you Global Positioning System device with your computer. TomTom offers a number of GPS devices, but the most commonly used are for car navigation. TomTom GPS devices provide street-to-street directions from one location to another. TomTom Home is a computer application included with your TomTom GPS device that allows you to upgrade software or add additional applications to your device.

    Connect your TomTom GPS device to your computer using a USB cable. Start the TomTom Home application. If you need to add additional maps to your GPS device click "Add Maps."

    Select the "Add Traffic, Voices, Safety Cameras, etc." button to add traffic reports, receive warnings when you are approaching safety cameras, install different voices, and add fuel prices to find the cheapest fuel with a subscription.

    Select "Update my device" to update the GPS device software to the latest release. Select "User TomTom Route Planner" to plan a route online.

    Click the "More" button to view more options. Select "Read the manual for my device" to view the GPS manual. Click "Manage my device" to remove items from your GPS device.

    Select "Back up and restore" to back up your GPS device to your computer or restore a saved backup. Click "Find accessories for my device" to buy accessories for your device online.

    Click "Operate my device" to view your device and control it from your computer.
