How to make a butterfly with wings costume

Updated April 17, 2017

A butterfly costume with wings is an outfit many young girls would like to wear for a recital or Halloween party. Putting together the costume at home with some basic household items is a cost-effective alternative to purchasing one in stores, where similar butterfly costumes can be pricey. Some tips and know-how can make creating a homemade butterfly with wings costume easy, and can be created quickly by even crafting novices.

Untwist two metal wire hangers with pliers. Use the pliers to twist each hanger into an oval shape. Make an indent on each side of the hangers at the lower bottom portion of the ovals so you have two wire shapes that look like a lopsided figure eight.

Cut a pair of white pantyhose so you just have the two legs left behind. Stretch one leg over each of the wire shapes and tie a knot at the bottom so the hose stays in place.

Paint a design of your choosing onto the hose. Paint circles and ovals in a colourful pattern similar to a butterfly wing. Let dry.

Tie the two sides of the butterfly wings together with some ribbon. Tie a bow at the centre where the two sides meet.

Tie a strip of elastic at two places on the ribbon to make a loop. A child can now step into this loop and pull it up to her chest, making the wings sit at the back. Pair these wings with a pink leotard and tights for a completed costume.

Let kids help decorate the butterfly wings.

Take care not to get any of the paint on your clothes.
