How to Make Cereal Box Purses

Updated February 21, 2017

Recycling a cereal box into a purse is a simple craft project that anyone can do. Explore your creativity with the design of the purse. Découpage the box with decorative wrapping paper to make a holiday-themed purse or with a menagerie of family photos to create a sentimental display. Select fabric that coordinates with your wardrobe to cover the cereal box, and then create distinctive designs with embellishments. The cereal box provides the basic structure, your imagination creates the drama.

Cut and remove a side panel from a cereal box. Shore up the top of the cereal box by covering it with duct tape. The top panel is now the side panel of the purse.

Cut a section of fabric to line the inside of the cereal box. Attach the fabric inside the box with a strip of duct tape around the inside top perimeter.

Place the cereal box facedown in the centre of a flat section of fabric. The box opening should be 2 inches from one edge of the fabric. Fold the fabric over the box until it meets in the centre of a side panel. Mark the fabric to indicate the cut line for the width.

Unfold the fabric and measure 2 inches away from the side opposite the open side. Mark the fabric.

Mark straight lines along the measurements using a straight edge. Cut the fabric on the lines.

Spray the outside of the cereal box with adhesive. Wrap the fabric around the box so that the ends meet along one side. Overlap the fabric on the bottom of the box. Leave the top edge extending over the cereal box opening. Smooth the fabric as you press it into the glue.

Run a bead of viscous craft glue around the inside of the cereal box, just beneath the top rim. Fold the fabric over the rim and press it into the glue. The fabric should cover most of the duct tape.

Run a bead of viscous craft glue between the overlapping fabric strips at the bottom of the purse. Press the fabric together and let the glue dry.

Cut a strip of 1-inch wide ribbon 2 inches longer than the desired length of the purse strap. Glue the ends of the ribbon onto the inside rim of the sides of the purse with viscous craft glue. Glue a 1-inch section of ribbon inside each side of the purse.

Cut a strip of ribbon to fit around the inside perimeter of the cereal box. Glue the ribbon inside the purse to cover and secure the ends of the strap.

Embellish the outside of the cereal box purse with feathers, rhinestones, buttons, vintage jewellery or anything else that you like. Use viscous craft glue to attach the embellishments.
