Things you need
- Mirrored material
- Heavy-duty Velcro
- 2 Acrylic plastic domes
- Silver tape
- Silver belts
- Silver wig
- Silver shoes
- Silver tights
- Silver long-sleeved shirt
- Utility knife
- Hot glue gun
- Dremel saw
Cut the top portion of both domes with the Dremel saw to make a circle. There should be a half circle cut out of both domes. The domes must be lined up so the ridge of the domes is perpendicular to the ground, so you can make the costume have a hinge to be able to get in and out. Cut the bottom portion of both domes in the same fashion to make another circle which the legs will go through.
Line the lip of both domes with heavy duty Velcro. This will help keep the costume together. Since the costume will essentially be made in two halves, you will probably need help to put the outfit on and take it off.
Glue silver belts to the inside of both domes. Make sure these line up with the costume-wearer's shoulders so they can provide suspension of the costume, much like suspenders. Cover the lip of one half of the costume with duck tape to cover the seam and provide a hinge. Use more duck tape to cover the raw edges of the two holes you cut on the ends of the domes to keep from getting scratched while wearing the costume.
Cut mirrored fabric into strips that fit around each half of the plastic sphere. If you are using craft mirrors, this will take more time, but will end up with the same effect. Using a hot glue gun, glue the fabric strips around the plastic halves until both sides are completely covered. If you are using craft mirrors, you will need to glue each one on individually to cover the entire costume.
Wear silver shirt, tights, shoes and wig with the mirrored disco ball costume to make the entire body sparkle. If you want, you can affix small flashlights to the edges of the wig to shine down, or use LED earrings to create a lighting effect that will make the disco ball sparkle when the lights hit it.
Tips and warnings
- Measure chest size of the person wearing the costume before cutting the acrylic domes. This will ensure the costume fits properly.
- Wear safety goggles and gloves when working with the saw and cutting the mirrored material.
- Do not allow children to try to make this costume on their own. Adult supervision and help will be needed.
