Start this Halloween costume by picking out the perfect straw hat. The floppy ones are best because they can be shaped to fit. Pull it down over your eyes for a menacing look, or sit it high on your head for a silly look.
Create the face of the scarecrow by applying a base coat of white make-up or face paint. You can use blush, but the effect is not as striking as the white face paint. Then take a black eyeliner pencil and draw four vertical lines beginning at the centre of your face. Next, draw four horizontal lines leaving a patchwork pattern on your face. Draw circles around the intersecting points and colour them in black so that it looks like buttons.
Apply black lipstick to your mouth, and buy a corn pipe to stick between your teeth. You can still find corn pipes at tobacco stores everywhere. If you cannot find one, you can make one out of a small piece of wood. If you do not wish to use a corn pipe, just stick a strand of straw in your mouth.
Dress in oversized blue jeans and an oversized flannel shirt. If you want to add some extra pop to the costume, sew on some patches and tear the pockets a bit. Anything that gives the scarecrow an older, worn look will help the effect.
Put on some old work boots and work gloves to round out the outfit. Leave the boots untied and flapping. The sloppier you make your clothes, the better the scarecrow costume will look.
Stuff straw into every place you can fit it; in your pockets, in your oversized clothes and especially in your hat. Make sure to leave parts of the straw hanging out all over the place. You want to appear "stuffed" so be very liberal with the straw.
Purchase a fake blackbird from a farmer's supply store or craft store. Attach the bird to your shoulder or even to your hat, if it will stay in place. This will really make the scarecrow outfit stand out. The more realistic the blackbird, the better the costume will look.
Tips and warnings
- Do not be afraid to overstuff the straw. The more you stuff, the better it will look.
- Make sure to take your time with the button face look.
- Be careful not to get the make-up in your eyes while applying it.
- Use the straw sparingly around your eyes.
- Make sure that you do not have an allergy to straw before using it.
