  1. 1

Hem the edges of your fabric by at least 12 mm (½ inch) to prevent the cloth from fraying.

  2. 2

Remove your clothing except for your undergarments. (You may leave on a short-sleeved T-shirt.) Begin at your back and wrap the fabric around your body under your arms snugly, so that your arms are left bare and the fabric reaches nearly to your knees or below (as desired). Wrap the material 1½ times around your body.

  3. 3

Throw the rest of the cloth over one shoulder and pin it securely to the back of the fabric where you started wrapping the toga.

  4. 4

Drape the fabric gracefully and smoothly in front so that it looks attractive.

  5. 5

Secure the toga around your waist with a sash or piece of cloth of the same or complementing material.

  6. 6

Accessorise if you like. Try wearing open-toed sandals, a wreath of bay-laurel leaves or flowers, a tiara or gold-cuff bracelets.

Tips and warnings

  • Girls and women: Be especially careful to wrap the cloth tightly and tie it securely, to avoid any potential embarrassment.
  • Select cloth that has a Romanesque appearance (a solid colour with a contrasting trim, for example) or use all-white fabric. This will make your toga more authentic-looking. If you opt for white, make sure that the fabric is opaque.
  • Don't use a bed sheet. It risks appearing tacky. Several yards of fabric is less expensive than a bed sheet and always looks much better.
