Dry, brittle split ends can leave otherwise silky hair looking frizzy. If your hair has been damaged by colour, bleach or heat styling, you may be left with split ends. Fortunately, you have options other than cutting your hair and losing the length you've worked so hard to grow. Repairing split ends doesn't even require a trip to the salon. You can mend split ends at home and save your hard-earned money.

  1. 1

Shampoo your hair less often if you're used to washing every day. Choose a moisturising protein shampoo and wash every two to three days. Massage the shampoo into your scalp only, working up a lather. Gently squeeze the suds through your hair as you rinse it.

  2. 2

Apply a deep-conditioning treatment containing nourishing oils like jojoba or olive oil. Fill the palm of your hand with conditioner and work it through your hair with your fingers, paying special attention to your split ends.

  3. 3

Cover your hair with a plastic shower cap.

  4. 4

Sit under a hood dryer or heat your hair with a blow-dryer for 20 minutes, still wearing the shower cap. Leave the cap on for another 30 minutes, allowing the heat from your head to help the conditioner penetrate your split ends.

  5. 5

Rinse the conditioner out of your hair with cool water. Spray on a leave-in conditioner, work it through your hair with your fingers and allow your hair to air-dry.

Tips and warnings

  • Apply shine serum to your hair before heat styling. The silicone will help protect your split ends and give them a smoother appearance.
