When visiting a hair salon or a barber, you may be asked to choose how long or short you want your hair by picking a number. These numbered haircuts correspond to blade attachments for the hair clippers. Knowing what the numbers mean is an important step in making sure you get the haircut you desire.

#1 Attachment

A haircut with a #1 attachment will cut the hair to an eighth of an inch.

#2 Attachment

Using a #2 blade, the hair will be cut to a quarter of an inch in length.

#3 Attachment

The #3 clipper attachment cuts hair to three-eighths of an inch long.

#4 Attachment

A haircut using a #4 blade will cut hair to half an inch long.

#7 Attachment

A #7 haircut leaves the hair at seven-eighths of an inch long.

#8 Attachment

The #8 blade attachment gives the longest haircut, cutting the hair to one inch in length.
