A teenager who is approaching 18 is doing more than turning a year older. He is growing closer to becoming an adult and assuming more responsibilities. Many 18-year-olds are graduating high school and entering college. Word a greeting card that lets your 18-year-old know how proud you are that he is becoming an adult.

Greeting

The opening of a greeting card is important. It lets the recipient know exactly what the card is about as soon as she opens it. Consider a simple greeting on the inside of the card that reads something like the following: "The day is finally here! Eighteen years old—adulthood is near!" or "Say goodbye to 17 today!"

Humour

Incorporate humour in your greeting card when you can. Read through other humorous cards to get ideas, and then tweak your card to reflect the sense of humour and personality of the card recipient. For example, inside the card you could write or type a joke such as the following: "Now that you are an adult, I thought you could start paying some bills" or "Try not to stay out all night now that you are 18. I don't want you to become an old man like me."

Poetry

Write a silly poem for your homemade greeting card. Write from the heart, and try to include specific attributes about your teenager. For example, you might write something like the following: "Happy birthday, to you at 18. You are more smart, handsome and funny than any I've seen."

Personal Message

Write a personal, heartfelt message. Humour is great, but writing a serious note of praise and encouragement is a critical part of a greeting card. You can make note of your teenager's milestone year by writing an honest reflection of her and how she has grown over the years. Your message also can include your hopes and dreams for her.

Money

Slip 18 crisp dollar bills inside your homemade greeting card. Go to your bank to get new bills to make sure they are crisp.

Keys

If you have the budget to help a teenager purchase a car, build the greeting around a car theme and let your teenager know that you are rewarding him for his responsibility and maturity. Slip the car keys inside the card, and include a message like the following: "Dear Son, I'm proud of you. You have worked hard and saved your money for a down payment for a car. For your birthday, I am going to make the monthly car payments for a year. I am counting on you to drive safely. I love you, and I believe in you and your judgment on the road."
