Haircuts for balding men

Updated February 21, 2017

Balding or thinning hair is a common condition for men. There are different types of male pattern baldness, which can cause the hair to fall out in various areas on the scalp. Depending on the type of baldness you have certain hairstyles are more suitable than others. There are haircuts that can showcase your facial features and distract from your thinning hair.

Buzz Cut

The buzz cut is ideal for men with thinning hair on the crown of their heads. As the hair thins it is unable to provide as much scalp coverage when compared to its once thicker state. Because of this, medium-to-longer hairstyles showcase the thinning hair by not fully covering the scalp due to the lack of hair follicles. The buzz cut shortens the hair so that it is able to appear thicker as the shorter hair strands are able to better cover the scalp. Hair clippers, which are the instrument used to create the buzz cut, trim hair to different lengths. These sizes include:

0 -- 1/100 of an inch; this length is achieved by not adding an attachment to the clippers.

1 -- 1/8 of an inch.

2 -- 1/4 of an inch.

3 - 3/8 of an inch.

4 - 1/4 of an inch.

5 and #6 -- ranges in length depending on brand of clippers.

7 -- 7/8 of an inch.

8 -- 1 inch.

Use the size and shape of your head as a guide for how short to cut your hair. Normally, the hair is cut shorter on sides of the head and longer on top. However, some men prefer to have the same length for the entire head. Consult with your stylist to determine the appropriate length for your head shape and balding pattern and severity.

Faux Hawk

The faux hawk is a modern style that has evolved from the traditional Mohawk hairstyle. This unique style can be achieved by cutting the hair at several different lengths, normally short on the sides and longer on top. For men who are balding on the sides of their forehead, leaving the middle thicker, this hairstyle allows you to make the best out of this balding pattern.

The faux hawk can be achieved by cutting the top of the hair so there is at least 1.5 inches of hair and the sides can be cut as short as you desire. With the help of a styling product, style so the hair on top of the head is pushed toward the centre of the crown, which will create a mini-Mohawk appearance. In order to have an appropriate looking faux hawk, visit your stylist and have them cut and style the hair for you.

Shaved Head

Unlike the buzz cut, which leaves a small amount of hair on your head, completely shaving the scalp will remove all signs of balding. This type of haircut is ideal for those who are thinning heavily on the top of their crown. To achieve this appearance, buzz the head with clippers that have no attachment. Apply a thick conditioning cream to the scalp and allow this cream to moisturise your hair for 30 minutes before rinsing clean. With extra-moisturising shaving cream, lather your hair and carefully shave with a razor. If you have never completely shaved your head before have a stylist do it for you, as this will ensure you do not get razor burn on your scalp.
