Toy Soldiers

Most boys of any age love military themes. For these boys, a military cake is great for their birthday. It is easy to create a special cake with an Army theme. Most colour schemes revolve around camouflage green, or blue and red.

Camouflage Cake

This is one of the simplest cakes that can be created. Bake a square cake that is the desired size. Once cool, it is ready to frost. Scrape white frosting into a bowl. Use food colouring to tint it a tan or light brown. Frost the cake with this colour. Next, put ½ cup sugar in a sealable bag. Add a few drops of food colouring. Seal the bag and move the sugar in the bag around to mix it with the food colouring. Do this again, ultimately creating a dark green or brown colour. While the frosting is still sticky, sprinkle the coloured sugar on the cake in patches. When you are finished, you should have a cake that looks like it is camouflage.

Cake Toppers

Dress up the cake. Look in the toy section at any store for small plastic soldiers. You might even find a plastic tank and other small army toys. Open the toy bags and empty them into a colander. Run very hot water over them to wash away any excess plastic bits and dust left on by the manufacturing process. Dry the toys thoroughly. Place them on the top of the cake in a design that you like. Once the cake is cut, party goers can rinse off the toys and play with them.

Tank Cake

Find a tank image on the Internet and print it out as large as you need the cake to be. Cut it out. Bake your cake a little larger then your tank cutout. Once the cake is cool, lay the cutout on top of the cake. With a sharp knife, cut the cake, following the edges of the paper. Remove the paper. Remove all the excess pieces from the cake and blow away the crumbs. Mix your frosting with food colouring so that it is a tank colour. Frost the cake. With a contrasting colour, dot on the details of the tank using a pastry bag. Do not forget to put a big white star on the tank.
