Hi this is Yolanda Vanveen and in this segment I am going to talk about how to grow an avocado plant. Now avocados are a wonderful addition to your fruit garden and I love to grow them but in order to grow them you have got to figure out how they grow naturally. Now avocados are a lot like olives. Now they want real sandy rocky good drainage. They don't want too much nutrition, really composted soil, sometimes they don't do as well and they want real hot full sun and they don't like too much humidity. They like it a little more arid so when you are growing them if you live in a warm climate you can put them right into the ground. If you live in a cold climate you can keep them in containers and keep them in the garage or keep them in a greenhouse for the Winter but you have got to remember that you have got full hot sun and you want to give them water but really let them dry out in between. They don't want to be too wet in any way or you are going to lose them and especially if you live somewhere where it's really really cold they don't like cold evenings so you want to keep them somewhere where it is going to be, don't put them outside until the nights are really warm because if it is still close at night, you are going to lose the leaves. They are not going to do well at all and the same thing, as soon as the nights get cold in the Winter bring them back in as well but as long as you follow these few rules and it is easy to harvest them too because as soon as they turn this nice black color, they're usually ready to go. A lot of times you can even cut them when they are green and let them ripen up but the greatest part about growing your own avocados is that you can cut them when they are ripe. You don't have to go to the grocery store and buy them green and wait for them to ripen up. You can take them right off of your tree right at the perfect point and enjoy them yourself. It's pretty much as easy as that.
