Children don't get to have all the fun. Today's adults juggle busy work schedules, complicated family to-do lists, personal friendships and hobbies, household finances and a million other responsibilities and activities. Organising an adult sleepover gives time to reconnect with old friends, get to know acquaintances better and offers some precious time away from life's mundane chores. Planning adult sleepovers around a theme not only makes invitations, decorations and activity organising simpler, it revs up your group's energy and anticipation for the event.

Retro Sleepover

Go old-school with a retro adult sleepover hearkening back to the gang's glory days. Serve slumber party staples that include pizza, popcorn, red liquorice and cupcakes. Encourage guests to wear funny pyjamas and give prizes for the goofiest pair. Screen film faves including "E.T.," "Jaws" or "The Exorcist." Tell ghost stories, make s'mores and serve sugar-coated cereal and doughnuts for breakfast. Don't mess around with kid-style drinks, though: guests expecting a strong cup of coffee won't be amused with hot cocoa and orange juice after staying up all night.

Ladies Night

Ladies night is another good adult sleepover idea. Set the scene with scented candles, build-your-own cosmopolitan martini bar and a big stack of romantic comedy movies. If budget permits, book a massage therapist, manicure and pedicure professional or palm reader to visit for a couple of hours. Guests can chip in beforehand or help with gratuities, but prearrange this to avoid uncomfortable situations. Serve healthy foods, such as crudités and hummus, sushi rolls and shrimp cocktail, but let guests indulge with grown-up versions of comfort foods, including truffle oil macaroni and cheese or pesto pizza.

Don't yawn; educational sleepover ideas don't have to be boring. Plan an adult slumber party around learning something new, so that guests go home with something other than gossip overload and stiff necks from sleeping on the floor. Invite a bartender to demonstrate how to make two or three speciality drinks, such as minty mojitos, eggnog martinis or the perfect margarita. Yoga instructors can lead intimate, late-night yoga and meditation sessions, or have an exotic dancer pace the gang through some basic pole dancing moves. Guys can learn the principles of establishing a mini home brewery, searing a great ahi tuna steak or mastering the nuances of favourite video games.

There's a reason why sleepovers peter out as people grow up; they require a big time commitment, and people are busy. Refrain from hassling guests who must arrive late or leave early as they might be coordinating with a babysitter or spouse to manage childcare issues. Subtly monitor guest alcohol consumption to avoid high-school style squabbles, blackouts or bathroom messes. And gently remind guests to keep late-night confidences secret; spilling the beans about someone's ailing marriage, job layoff or misbehaving teenager is a major party foul.
