Whether you're planning a simple dinner at a restaurant, a huge party or an elegant surprise party for a woman's 40th birthday, be sure to have several creative ideas ready to share. From the decorations to the party games to the food, use a party theme you are sure the birthday guest of honour will love. Shower her with gifts and a special party she will remember for years to come.

You must first decide where to have the party before moving on with any more plans. If the guest of honour doesn't want a big party, host a small dinner party at a local restaurant. Tie a couple of balloons to her chair and have everyone sing her happy birthday.

If she doesn't mind having a big party, try renting out a banquet hall and see about hiring a local disc jockey to play some of her favourite tunes. Decorate the party area in her favourite colours with balloons and streamers. Hang signs that say, "Lordy, lordy, look who's forty" and "It took 40 years to look this good."

Memorable Gifts

Create some memorable gifts that will last a lifetime for the birthday girl. Gather pictures from all her loved ones and create a scrapbook. If you're not crafty enough or don't have the time to do a scrapbook, create a collage. Take a large piece of cardboard and wrap it in black velvet fabric. Take small white Christmas lights and hang around the outside of the board. Create a collage using all the pictures given to you by the birthday girl's loved ones.

If the budget allows, take the photos to a photographer and have him create a video slideshow of all the pictures accompanied by music. Play this video at the guest of honor's birthday party.

Birthday Roast

Honour the birthday guest with a roast in her name. Have her sit at the head of the table at a restaurant or in front of all the party guests. Each guest must share one secret or memory of the birthday girl. Be sure to get the video camera out because the retelling of these memories can be quite entertaining.

Make a trivia game based on songs from the year the birthday girl was born up until her high school years. Ask questions about the songs and artists and see who can guess the most answers correctly.

Play a game like hot potato using a red teddy bear named "Hot Flash." Have all party guests sit in a circle and pass "Hot Flash" around while the music is going. When the music stops, the person holding the bear is out of the game. The last player standing wins "Hot Flash" as a party favour.
