An 18th birthday generally symbolises a young man's passage into adulthood and eventual entrance to college. Take advantage of the occasion to celebrate your boyfriend's18th birthday with a gift that will cater to his hobbies, prepare him for college or simply provide a memorable experience for him and his friends.

A Night Out

Whether it's just you and your boyfriend on a romantic outing or a group of friends out on the town, giving your boyfriend tickets to a concert, movie or sports event ensures that you'll have something fun and memorable to share. You can start out with dinner at your favourite restaurant or plan to go out for a late-night milkshake after the big event.

Chances are your boyfriend will bring a computer to college. Though a computer itself might be too big of an expense for you, you could get him something that will help the two of keep in touch, such as a webcam or mp3 player pre-loaded with some of your favourite songs. An i-pod dock with speakers is guaranteed to get use at the dorm room, fraternity party or even a picnic for just the two of you.

Gift Card

If your boyfriend has particular taste, you might be better off getting a gift card. If your boyfriend is into video games, consider a gift card at his favourite software and gaming store. If you know he'd like a new jersey or athletic apparel, get a gift card so that he can pick it out himself. Another idea is to buy your boyfriend a prepaid gas card. Though it might not sound like the most exciting gift, the prospect of going on a road trip with you or his friends will send his imagination soaring.

Outdoor Gear

Maybe your boyfriend has been planning some kind of camping trip or beach excursion for the spring break or summer vacation after he turns 18. You can help him get excited about the experience by helping with some of the essentials. If he's planning to go camping, a canoe, fishing rod, headlamp or sleeping bag will come in handy. If he's planning on going to the beach, a funky pair of sunglasses, new swimming suit, boogie board or temporary tattoo will help him soak up some sun and surf in style.

Be Creative

Don't be afraid to be a bit zany. Throw him a surprise party when he thinks it's just going to be the two of you. Stand outside of his house with a megaphone singing "Happy Birthday" in a comic falsetto. Stuff his mailbox full of his favourite candy or snack, like in the movie "Juno"--just warn his parents first. Decorate his locker at school, leave a message in soap on his car, or enlarge one of his funniest baby pictures with the message "Happy Birthday, kiddo!" and tape it up in the school hallways. He might be a bit embarrassed at first, but chances are he'll be happy you made his big day such a special one.
