Choosing the right paint colour for a bedroom is a challenge. Of course it takes time and money, so it's a big decision that you want to get right the first time. More specifically, if you're trying to select a paint colour for a room with black bedroom furniture, you'll look for a colour that will complement the sleek sophistication of the furniture. Many choices that will look good and continue to please you for years.

Neutrals

In colour theory, the neutrals include black, white and grey, and they are not considered colours. In the case of interior design, a neutral is a noncommittal colour that falls in a vague category like grey, blue-grey or beige. These neutrals match just about everything. You can go one of two ways when trying to find an appropriate neutral that is cool tinted, or warm tinted. If you chose a blue-grey or flat grey wall paint, you'll probably want to stick to cool coloured accessories, such as blues, purples and greens. You may also choose a brown/warm tinted neutral like beige. In this case, warm coloured accessories -- even dark, earthy browns -- are appropriate.

Purples

This royal colour makes a striking combination with black. Paint your walls a grey-purple, and look for a variety of purple and silver grey accessories to bring the look together. However, in the case of a small room, a dark purple paired with black furniture may become too claustrophobic. Proceed with caution, and only use this colour in a room with a lot of natural daylight.

Cream

This minimalistic, utilitarian combination makes a sophisticated statement. For a classy look, pair your black furniture and cream coloured walls with a cream bedspread and some original framed pen and ink drawings.

Sage

This understated colour is so flexible in its applications, it's almost a neutral. Paint your walls sage green, pull up your carpet to reveal the hardwood floors beneath and decorate your room with little flourishes like a vase of grey curling twigs, a cosy little lamp with a light grey shade and a large mirror with a frame painted in distressed grey.
