Turkey is a country rich in cultural distinctiveness, including the denotative hairstyles that Turkish men and women have available to them. What makes Turkish hairstyles uncommon from the hairstyles of certain other countries, like the U.S. or Western Europe, is that how a person looks often affects how they are viewed from a political perspective.

Men's Hairstyles in Turkey

For the most part, Turkish men have a haircut that is short and well-maintained, the front of which is generally longer. The utilitarian nature of the Turkish men's haircut is designed as a form of respect and adherence to national culture. Turkish barbers are also known for saying "Sihhatler olsun" at the end of a haircut, which means "May it be healthy." The typical response to this is "Elinize saglik," meaning "Health to your hands." Foreigners are actually not allowed to be employed as barbers in Turkey, as it is considered a sacred art form among Turks only.

Women's Hairstyles in Turkey

Women in Turkey are also known for having hairstyles that are functional as opposed to "stylish" nature. Commonly they wear their hair in braids, along with a head covering of some type (mainly head scarves). The main reason for this specific style is because of the extremely hot climate of Turkey. This way, women are still able to maintain the long length preferred by Middle Eastern culture while still attaining some level of comfort.

Hairstyles Deemed "Unacceptable" in Turkey

In Turkey, the regard for a certain level of reverence, somewhat steeped in the prominence of the Muslim religion, is seminal to how men and women wear their hair. Therefore, styles like mohawks, mullets, or shaved heads (especially on women) are not typically as welcomed as the traditional customs for hair.
