It is important to wear colours that flatter your features. Carole Jackson, creator of the Seasonal Color Analysis make-up system, says that finding the colour that compliments your tone brings out your special beauty. Seasonal Color Analysis matches your make-up to your hair, eye and skin colour. In this system, women are grouped in four groups or seasons, winter, spring, summer and fall. A woman with long, black hair and brown eyes would be categorised as an autumn or dark winter, depending on her complexion.

Eye colour

Eye shadows that are deep purple, navy blue, charcoal, black and pure white suit the dark hair and brown eyes of those with cool complexions.  Make your eyes pop with a smoky appearance. Apply either a deep blue or purple shadow from the lashline up to the crease. Then blend it with black eye shadow, smudging it with your finger. Line both the upper and lower lashlines with a black pencil, dabbing black eye shadow over the pencil afterward. Finish the look with a white shimmery shadow under the brow bone and in the inner corner of the eye.

For warm complexions, try eye shadows that are chocolate, emerald, and pine green. Apply a chocolate shadow to your lid. Blend the emerald shadow into the crease and along the upper and lower lashline. Apply a cream-coloured shadow to the inner corner of your eye and under the brow bone.

Red is a power colour for women with black hair and brown eyes. Apply red-tinged blush to your cheeks to compliment your look and sculpt your cheekbones. Create the illusion of high cheekbones by brushing the apples of your cheeks with a light-colour blush. Then suck in your cheeks and contour the hollows with a darker-coloured blush. Blend the two colours together for a seamless finish.

Lip colour

Wear red lipstick to create a contrast with your dark hair and brown eyes. Lora Alexander of the Pretty Your World website recommends a bright tomato red for warm complexions and a deep true red for cool complexions. Prime lips with a lip primer or lip balm. If using lip balm, wipe it off with warm washcloth after 30 seconds. Then cover your lips with a nude lip liner. Apply a red lip stain followed by a sheer red lipstick. Dab silver or gold lip gloss down the centre of your lips to finish the look with some shine.
