Bay Window & Seat Ideas
A bay window provides extra space and views. (bay windows image by L. Shat from

Bay windows, unlike their flat relatives, stand out proudly from your home, offering a three-angled view. Because they stand out from the home, bay windows carve out extra space from the wall. In many cases, this extra space is converted to a window seat, stretching from end to end of the window, providing a place to rest and observe the world.

Other People Are Reading

Book Nook

For people who love reading, the bay window and seat may make the perfect book nook. With a couple of comfortable pillows or a bay window pillow liner on top of the seat, a few other additions turn a simple gazing spot into the place to dive into your next best seller. A tall torchiere-style lamp ensures ample light day or night; and an end table next to the seat offers a place to rest your book and a cup of coffee. If your window seat is extra-long, use a portion of the end opposite where you sit to collect your reading materials. Seeing your books waiting for you may make settling in to read even more inviting.

Holiday Theme

During the holidays, you may whizz through your house stringing up lights, putting out pumpkins, hiding eggs and taping up hearts on your walls, steps and even around the outside of the home. Your bay window and seat give you more acreage for your decorations and are especially well-suited for the changing holiday looks. Collections of window decals, which adhere to the inside of the window (keeping them safe from the rain or cold weather), are available at dollar stores for just about every holiday on the calendar. Once you’ve got your bay window decaled, add some matching throw pillows, a small stuffed toy such as a Santa or leprechaun and a blanket. Each time you pass by, the holiday theme will help you get more in the spirit and when the holiday comes to an end, you’ll be ready to dress up your bay window and seat for the next celebration.

Hidden Storage

The seat in your bay window need not just be for sitting, it can also provide a great deal of extra storage. If you just can’t seem to find a place to store extra supplies, a lift-up bay window seat may be ideal. If your bay window is in the kitchen, the hidden storage spot may be useful for storing non-perishable goods such as boxes of cereal and pasta. In a child’s room, the lift-up seat can corral toys, bedding and games. Seats anywhere can store an overflow of books, hide holiday gifts or keep valuables out of sight. A hidden storage-style bay window seat looks exactly like a traditional kind with the exception of a couple of hinges; you won’t notice a difference, except when you find yourself with more available room.
