Different Necklace Chains
There are hundreds of types of chain necklaces. (necklace image by Andrey Rakhmatullin from Fotolia.com)

Chain necklaces are worn by men and women of all ages and come in a wide variety of styles and sizes. You can wear a chain by itself or with a pendant or other type of necklace charm. Sizes include choker size which is 16 inches and collarbone, which measures 17 to 18 inches. A 24-inch chain will go past the neckline while a 30-inch chain is just below the bustline. Chain types include omega, foxtail and rope.

Oval Link Chains

Oval link chains come in many forms. Byzantine is an intricate type of neck chain that consists of two pairs of oval-shaped links. These links are held together and then parted by a third, thicker link attached to each pair. Curb chains are twisted oval-shaped links that are often diamond-cut in order to lie flat. Mariner link chains are oval links that contain a bar which divides the middle of every link. Foxtail is a popular chain with two rows of oval links that face each other at a 45 degree angle. The links are connected by a centre row of flat rings set flush with each other.

Smooth/Flat Chains

One of the most popular types of flat chain is the herringbone chain. The links are short, flat, slanted and parallel in at least two rows. The direction of the slant alternates with each row. Singapore is a type of chain similar to herringbone that's twisted. The links make up a series of flat, diamond-cut, interwoven loops. Small, flat, s-shaped links comprise the serpentine chain. The links are set close together and are kept in place by a set of twin links below them. Omega chains are a kind of flat chain with smooth, rounded, rectangular metal plates joined side by side. They are crimped along the ends onto a strip of metal mesh.

Round, Spiral And Other Chain Types

Round chains include cable and snake chains. Snake chains look like a smooth flexible tube. They are comprised of a series of wavy, round metal rings joined tightly together to create a smooth appearance. A cable chain is a standard chain made up of round rings of the same size linked to each other. Rope chains have a spiral appearance as they are two thick chain strains woven together. With box chains, each link is wide and square. The links all interconnected.
