Facebook chat is an easy way to have a real-time conversation online -- as long as the feature is working properly. Unfortunately, sometimes Facebook chat experiences technical problems, or bugs. One such bug bounces users offline randomly during conversations. If you experience a bug while using chat, report it to Facebook.
Other People Are Reading
Facebook chat offers three statuses: online, offline and idle. When you're online, you see a list of other online friends and are able to initiate a new conversation. Likewise, your online friends may contact you. When you go offline, you don't see which of your friends are online and may not take part in chat conversations. An idle status means that you're online and available for chat, but appear to have gone inactive on Facebook.
Going Online and Offline
When Facebook chat is functioning properly, your status changes only when you manually go online or offline. To go online, just click the grey "Chat" icon in the lower right corner of any Facebook screen. Go back offline by clicking the "Options" tab at the top of your chat window and selecting "Go Offline" from the menu. Facebook automatically sets your status to idle when you're online but haven't taken any action on Facebook in at least 10 minutes.
Facebook keeps track of known bugs and problems on the site. At the time of publication, one of the known chat problems involves users being repeatedly bounced offline and then back online in the middle of a conversation. The person you're chatting with can send you messages, but during the times you go offline, she isn't visible. Once you go back online, the message is waiting for you and you're able to respond.
Report a Bug
Let Facebook know that you're experiencing problems with connectivity so the site technicians are able to work on correcting the issue. Click the "Account" link in the upper right corner of the screen and then click "Help Center." Go to the "Report a bug" link and choose "Chat" from the "Facebook Features" section. Click "My friend keeps going online and offline while we're chatting" and then go to the highlighted "Here" link to create and submit a report.
