The Victorian style of interior design is a colourful and lavish option for home decor. During the Victorian era, bold colour choices and ornate furniture were the common theme. While the style was overdone and opulent throughout its heyday, the choice of colours and style changed toward the end of its popularity. In the early days of Victorian decor, the colour choices were light, dainty and distinctly feminine. As time went on, Victorian decor became darker and stately.

Uses

Early Victorian area rugs really tied the room together; they provided a splash of colour and design to traditional wood flooring. The hand-woven rugs could be in a circular or square design and homeowners used them liberally throughout the home. The rugs added warmth and texture to the hard smooth wood flooring. Areas such as fireplaces, staircases and conversation areas were decorated with accessories, colour and textures including rugs.

Colours

The colours in the early Victorian period were light, feminine and airy. Blue, green, red, rose, cream and white were used liberally throughout the rooms. When you select the rugs for your Victorian room, choose lighter shades to replicate the appearance of the decor in its earliest years.

Floral Motif

The floral motif was popular throughout the Victorian era. Area rugs with a floral pattern around the borders or scattered throughout the piece complement a Victorian style room perfectly. For example, a rug with a robins egg blue background patterned with tiny roses all over the rug would work well in a Victorian room.

Asian Design

The Victorian style used decorative elements from a variety of sources including Asian and Egyptian. Asian area rugs were a common choice in a Victorian home throughout the period. To recreate a Victorian decor use antique pieces or reproductions on the floors. The Asian inspired rugs add bold and rich colours to the room decor such as deep blue, red and lavish gold.
