One of the best parts of camping is campfire skit night. According to Baden Powell, the founder of the Boy Scouts of America, "Singing and acting are excellent for training in self-expression. They mean good team work, everybody learning his part and doing it well, not for applause for himself but for the success of the whole show." Camp skits are common in many different camping situations -- girl's camp, school science camps, church camps, scout camps, family reunion camps and summer camps. Whether you are new to camping, or an old pro, camp skit ideas will help make skit night a success.
Laughter and Fun
The main purpose of camp skits is sitting around the campfire, and having fun and laughing together with the group. There are many other benefits of camp skits as well, such as self-expression, building self-confidence, team work, planning, learning communication skills, spontaneity, quick thinking, organisation, making new friends, and getting and giving recognition for a job well done.
Skit preparation is important so the actors are successful. In many situations, the campers will know they will be asked to do a skit at an upcoming campfire and can prepare it at their prior meetings. This gives them plenty of time to decide on and practice the skit. Sometimes it is fun to break up into groups during the campfire and give the actors 15 minutes to prepare. The skits may not be perfect and the actors will mess up their lines, but this often adds to the hilarity of the skits.
Assigning a Theme
Most camp skits are not pre-assigned and the actors have the freedom to perform whatever skit they want. In some situations you might want to give an assigned subject or theme for the skits. You can give everyone the same theme or individual groups different themes. Assigning a theme will require the campers to write a new skit, as opposed to using skits that are popular and done over and over again. For example, if the skits will be performed at a church camp, assign honesty or helping others as the skit theme. If it is at a girl's camp, assign the subject of "getting ready for a date" and you will get some very funny and insightful skits. The best skit theme ideas will follow closely the theme and purpose of the camp.
A fun skit idea is giving the actors a skit prompt and having them act it out immediately. A good way of doing this is to give a bag of objects to a group of actors and have them pull the objects out of the bag and put a skit together within minutes. You can also give them a slip of paper with a skit prompt (a word or sentence) and have them act it out immediately, similar to the game of charades.
Even the most popular and overdone skits are fun to watch again with new actors. The Internet abounds with sites that have scripts to most of the common skits. Following are some widely recognised skits: Firing Squad, Emergency Alert System, Invisible Bench, Give the Frog a Loan, Bravest Camper in the World, The Submarine, The Raisin, J.C. Penney, Is it Time Yet and Baking a Cake. Choosing one of these common skits is always acceptable and fun.
