Summer Fete Ideas

Kids are out of school, families are taking vacations and the weather is warm enough for an outdoor celebration. Ring in the summer with style by hosting a summer fete for your family and friends. Several theme ideas work well for a summer soirée, whether you choose a holiday-themed event or simply one that embraces the season. Everything from your food to your party entertainment can reflect your event theme.

If you can't get away to your favourite tropical locale this summer, bring the sand to you by hosting a luau. Transform your backyard into a tropical paradise -- scatter sand on your patio or keep it confined to a kid-friendly sandbox for less mess -- and play your favourite island music on your MP3 player. Serve up frozen concoctions like pina coladas and margaritas for adult guests, and don't forget the umbrella in the drink. A menu of Hawaiian-inspired dishes like teriyaki chicken skewers, yellow rice and fruit salad will bring a taste of the islands to your summer fete.

Fourth of July

There's no better reason to celebrate the summer than the Fourth of July. Use this patriotic theme for your summer fete. Fire up the grill, and throw on steak and chicken kebabs for adults, and hamburgers and hot dogs for the younger set. An ice cream sundae bar will delight children and adults alike. Sparklers -- or a good view of your community's fireworks show -- can wrap up this red, white and blue event.

Pool Party

If the summer heat is too much for you to handle, host a pool party to stay cool. You may be able to rent the community pool and pavilion for this summer fete. Alternatively, you can transform your backyard into a water park using inflatable water slides, sprinklers and kiddie pools. Encourage guests to wear their swimsuits, and let the water play begin. Water-balloon fights and relay races in the pool can keep guests entertained. You don't need to provide a full meal for this party since guests will spend most of their time splashing in the pool, but you can provide light refreshments like fruit salad, chips and dip, and flavoured ices. Supply beverages like fruit juice, iced tea and water so your guests can stay well hydrated.

Summer Solstice

The summer solstice offers up more daylight than any other day of the year. Take advantage of this notable day by throwing a summer fete. Choose seasonal decorations and food for your summer-themed event. Offer up fruit and veggie trays with in-season items and satisfying dips. Fill beach pails with sand, and place in-season flowers like orchids and roses in them for some thematic centrepieces. Let guests mingle and enjoy the daylight that the summer solstice has to offer.
