The second generation iPod nano, model number A1199, was released by Apple in 2006. It comes in five different colours, and you could get a 2, 4 or 8GB model. Like many Apple products, it still works with current versions of iTunes, so even though it's an older model, you can still use the iPod nano to play music or podcasts and view photos. Before you start using it, however, check to see if your nano has the most recent software update.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Plug the iPod nano's USB cord into the nano and a USB port on your computer.

  2. 2

    Open iTunes.

  3. 3

Click on your iPod nano in the "Devices" list to open your iPod's summary page in iTunes. You see a message telling you if you need to update your iPod nano.

  4. 4

Click "Update." iTunes downloads the software update and applys it to your iPod nano.

  5. 5

Click the "Eject" button next to your iPod nano in the "Devices" list to safely remove it from your computer.

  6. 6

    Unplug your iPod nano.
