How to Tie a Helicopter Rig

Rigs are as much a part of fishing as is a rod and reel. A rig allows any angler to present a baited hook to fish in different levels of water. A helicopter rig is an example of a specialised rig that was once used primarily by surf anglers. Over time, the helicopter rig was successfully adapted for use by carp anglers. Assembling the rig requires only a few materials.

Things you need

  • Barrel swivel
  • Monofilament fishing line
  • Hook
  • Bead
  • Swivel snap
  • Weight
  • Rubber band
  • PVA line
  • Bait

Instructions

  1. 1

    Slide a barrel swivel onto the end of your fishing line. Place an orange or red bead on the line below the barrel swivel.

    Cut a 12-inch length of monofilament fishing line from a filler spool with scissors to use as a leader.

  3. 3

    Tie one end of the leader to the eye of the barrel swivel with a uni knot. Attach a circle hook to the opposite end of the leader with a Palomar knot.

    Tie a swivel snap to the end of your main line below the barrel swivel and bead with a uni knot.

  5. 5

    Attach a weight to the swivel snap. Choose a bank, drop shot or pyramid weight based on fishing conditions, personal preference.and the type of fishing you will be doing.
