How to Clean the History in Office Picture Manager

Microsoft's Office Picture Manager, included with Microsoft Office, is a tool that enables you to perform basic management, editing and sharing operations on your images. It includes a most-recently used, or MRU, list that displays a history of folders you've viewed. This feature can be a privacy concern, or, if the MRU list contains references to folders that no longer exist, can slow down Office Picture Manager. You can delete items from this list by editing the Office Picture Manager catalogue file.

    Close Office Picture Manager if it's open.

    Click "Start," type "%AppData%" without quotes into the search box in the Start menu and press "Enter."

    Double-click the Microsoft folder in the window that appears, then double-click the OIS folder inside it.

    Double-click the OIScatalog.cag file.

    Click "Select a Program From a List of Installed Programs" and click the "OK" button.

    Select "Notepad" in the list of available programs and click "OK."

    Select each line that begins with "<mru" and delete it. Delete "<mru" at the beginning of the line and "/>" at the end of the line, as well as everything between them.

    Click the "File" menu in Notepad and click "Save."

    Close the Notepad window.

Tips and warnings

  • Click "Start," select "Run" and type "%AppData%" without quotes into the Run dialogue box if you're using Windows XP or an older version of Windows.
