Whether your small hall and stairway are near the entrance of your home or tucked away in some far corner, how you decorate them will enhance your overall decor. Halls and stairways are not generally the first spaces in a home to be decorated, but their potential for design impact makes them worth the effort. The first step in creating a hall and stairway area with visual impact is to determine your decor style.

  1. 1

Tie the two areas together decoratively as though they are one fluid space. As you walk into the hallway your eye will automatically take in the hall and stairway, so respect that fact by introducing the same decorative elements to both -- using one theme to decorate and one colour scheme to unite the area. Using varying shades of the same paint colour in the hall and stairway will create a settling backdrop for the rest of your design. If there is carpeting going up the stairs, install an area rug in the hallway in a coordinating colour.

  2. 2

Choose one primary focal point -- either the hall or stairway. For example, if your hallway is going to be the focal point you could hang a large mirror on the hall wall and three smaller mirrors horizontally on the stairway wall. Or, if your stairway is the primary focal point, you might hang a colourful bird painting on that wall and place a faux bird's nest on a small wall table in the hallway. The idea is make one area the "star" of the show and the other an accent.

  3. 3

Install proper lighting, which is considered a necessity in the Asian design practice of feng shui. Light naturally offers ambience and cheeriness to a space that may otherwise lack both. Skylights and windows are a good way to introduce natural light, but if the area doesn't have either, provide your own. Place a chandelier or large pendant light in the hall and decorative sconces on the stairway wall.

  4. 4

Remove clutter. Few things will mar overall decor like unnecessary clutter. Prevent this area from becoming a catch-all for items as they come into the house or for things that need to be carried upstairs. Regardless of the decor style you opt for, keeping it clutter-free will enhance its appearance.
