S-Curls has always been a popular hair-straightening method for African-American men. Manufactured by the Lustre's Co. since the 1980s, S-Curls men have turned to this product for creating soft waves or "s-curls" in their hair. Similar to permanents and relaxers, it turns coarse or kinky, wiry hair into manageable curls or waves.

Read the directions carefully before starting. If necessary, perform a patch test on the skin with a small mix of the solution. Wait 24-48 hours to watch for allergic reactions to the product. If no adverse reaction has occurred, proceed with the application to the hair.
Using the protective cream or petroleum jelly, apply to the skin directly below scalp and around hairline. Apply the protective cream to the ears and below the nape of the hair as well.
Put on your gloves. Mix the solution or prepare the activator according to the manufacturer's directions. Starting at the crown or the most resistant part of the head, apply the cream from root to ends, being careful not to apply the activating cream to the scalp. If only applying for a retouch, apply the cream from root to the line of demarcation. Work through the hair until all the hair is covered with the s-curl activation cream. Do not comb or straighten the hair at this time, since this will remove the curl.
Check the process of the hair against the timer. When you begin to see the S-formation in the hair shaft, rinse out the activating cream. Wash the hair in lukewarm water following the recommended allotted period of time. Be careful to not get the solution in your eyes. When the hair is rinsed thoroughly, shampoo the hair with neutralising shampoo. Wash the hair twice or when the shampoo turns white instead of pink. Thoroughly rinse.
Condition the hair if necessary and style the hair as usual. Discard any unused activating cream and all disposable tools.
