The tradition of reading fortunes from coffee, a method known as tasseography, or "kafemandeia" in Greece, originated in China with the reading of tea-leaves. Greek coffee grounds are rich in taste and ideal in consistency for coffee-reading, which is also often done with African and Turkish coffees. Fortunes are read from Greek coffee by analysing the symbols found in the leftover sludge once the cup is finished.

  1. 1

Use a long-handled briki, the traditional device used for coffee-reading, to brew a batch of Greek coffee. Pour the Greek coffee into a small cup.

  2. 2

Drink the coffee slowly, enjoying the beverage. If you have a specific question you would like to be answered in your fortune, focus on it while consuming the coffee.

  3. 3

Finish the cup of Greek coffee and, holding the cup so that it is facing out on its side, turn it clockwise three times. The sludge from the bottom of the coffee cup should be spilling out and spreading around the surface of the cup.

  4. 4

Pour out any excess coffee sludge from the handle-side of the cup. Turn the cup over onto a napkin and leave it be for several moments while focusing on asking for guidance in reading your fortune.

  5. 5

Pick up the coffee cup and hold it upright. Examine the leftover coffee sludge on the inside of the cup for symbols. Symbols can be anything from animals, landmarks and rivers to initials, moons and hobby-related items. Keep an open mind and avoid trying too hard to distinguish symbols.

  6. 6

Predict your fortune according to the symbols you see in the coffee cup. The Athens Guide website states that the symbols found on the bottom of the cup represent the past, the symbols on the sides of the cup represent the present and the symbols near the top of the cup represent what is approaching.

Tips and warnings

  • Have fun with doing Greek coffee readings. Enjoy yourself but don't take it too seriously.
  • If you are unsure of what exactly a symbol is, ask a friend or family member for a second opinion.
