Instructions

  1. 1

Determine which Clairol Nice 'N Easy Highlights product is right for you according to hair type, hair colour and the type of highlights you want. Choose HairPainting to create highlights on the top layer of already coloured hair, or choose Frost & Tip Permed for all-over highlights on permed hair. Frost & Tip Original creates all-over highlights on dark brown to light brown hair, and Frost & Tip Creme creates all-over highlights on medium brown to light blond hair.

  2. 2

Check out the Expert Color Advice on Clairol's Nice 'N Easy Highlighting website as a guideline to achieve the final effect you want to achieve. This chart contains four types of highlights: all-over highlights, face-framing highlights, crown highlights and accented tips. It provides tips and techniques to achieving each look.

For all-over highlights that lighten your hair, use Frost & Tip with the provided cap.

To get face-framing highlights that accentuate your facial features and add warmth to skin, use HairPainting along your hairline, or use Frost & Tip with the cap, by pulling out strands just in the front.

For crown highlights such as for short styles or to add dimension to the front and top of your hair, use HairPainting on selected strands or use Frost & Tip with the cap to pull out selected strands.

To create accented tips to lighten just the ends of your hair, use HairPainting just on the tips, or Frost & Tip with or without the cap, covering just the ends.

  3. 3

Wash and dry hair completely before highlighting. Do not use any styling products, as hair should be clean of any residue. Brush or comb to remove any tangles right before highlighting.

  4. 4

Prepare the Nice 'N Easy mixture by opening the Supreme Creme Lightener or Supreme Developing Creme and empty it out into a bowl or the provided mixing tray. Shake the Supreme Lightening Activator and add it to bowl. Add in the Supreme Creme Lightener. Products may vary depending on the type of Nice 'N Easy you are using. Simply open all the contents and empty them out into a bowl or mixing tray. Mix together using a spoon until the mixture is smooth.

  5. 5

Perform a strand test by applying the mixture using the colouring brush to a single strand, such as from the darkest part of your hair close to your neck. Cover the strand with aluminium foil or leave it as is. Wash the mixture off after 30 minutes or longer if the colour has not yet developed. If the colour is as desired, and you did not have an allergic reaction to the product, you are ready to start highlighting.

  6. 6

Cover your shoulders with an old towel or wear old clothes that you don't mind getting stains on.

  7. 7

Dip the provided brush in the mixture and pick up a small amount. Hold it as you would hold a pencil, and start brushing the mixture onto selected hair strands starting about 1/4 inch from the scalp.

If using the cap, put it on and tie it in the front. Depending on the look you want to achieve, pull out strands from its holes by placing the plastic hook flat against the cap, slipping it through a hole and gently pulling it straight out. Pull out strands either all over, just in the front for face framing, at the crown for crown highlights, or all over but through fewer holes for a less dramatic effect. Cover hair in the back with cling film or foil if it is longer than the cap to protect it from getting coloured. Dip the brush in the mixture and apply a small amount to each pulled out strand. Pile hair on top of head and cover it with foil.

  8. 8

Set the timer, and wait from 30 minutes to an hour for the colour to develop. Check on the colour after 30 minutes, and leave it on longer if it isn't as desired.

  9. 9

Remove the plastic cap, if you used it, once colour is ready. Rinse off completely, then wash hair with shampoo. Apply the included Conditioning Creme and leave on for two to five minutes. Use the Moisture Intensive Conditioning Creme once per week to keep colour fresh. Rinse and style hair as usual. Throw out any remains of Nice N' Easy, except for the conditioning cremes.
