Dust mites, a relative of the spider, are microscopic insects that thrive on human skin and live in bedding, furniture, clothing and carpeting. You may live in the 85 per cent of homes that have detectable levels of dust mites. According to the American College of Asthma, Allergy & Immunology, up to 10 per cent of the population suffers from allergic reactions to dust mites. Symptoms may include itchy eyes, respiratory problems, eczema and asthma. Commercially prepared insecticides often contain chemicals that create fumes that may exasperate allergies. Learn how to prepare a homemade spray with safer ingredients to get rid of dust mites.
Add 15 to 25 drops of eucalyptus essential oil and 1 cup of vodka to a spray bottle. Use less eucalyptus oil in the mixture if the smell is too strong for you.
Shake the ingredients well.
Spray pillows, bedding, couches and other areas that have dust mite infestation several times each week. Spray carpets and window curtains as well, if necessary.
You can also add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to your laundry, which will help kill dust mites.
