Capacitor discharge ignition, or CDI, units are standard on all gas-powered scooters. De-restricting a scooter's CDI will allow it to travel three miles per hour faster. A small washer, locatable in the CDI's variator system, restricts the performance level of the CDI's drive belt. This limits the amount of power that transfers from the engine to the rear wheel, slowing the scooter. Removing this washer de-restricts a scooter's CDI.
Unpin the kickstart from the side of the scooter CDI. You will need to loosen the bolt head of the pin connecting the kickstart in order to variator system before pulling the pin out and removing the kickstart.
Separate the intake from the back of the variator system by removing the two bolts attaching it to the case and the single bolt holding it in place under the rear wheel well.
Detach the face of the scooter CDI's variator system by unscrewing the bolts holding it onto the variator system. There are two group of bolts, one group on top of the variator case and one group on the bottom of the case.
Disengage the frontmost pulley wheel from the variator system. The wheel is secured in the system with a single bolt through its centre point. You will need an impact wrench to remove this bolt.
Extirpate the small washer around the pulley rod to which the front pulley wheel was attached. This washer restricts the drive system.
Put the variator system back together and reattach the intake and kickstart to the variator case.
Hold the front pulley wheel in place with a strap wrench and unscrew the centre bolt with a socket wrench if you do not have an impact wrench.
De-restricting the scooter CDI could require you to re-register your scooter as a larger-class motorcycle.
