No matter how much memory or space you have on your iPhone, there comes a time when you may choose to delete a ringtone or two. While ringtones on an iPhone cannot be deleted from the phone itself, you can connect and sync your iPhone with your iTunes library and utilise that feature to administer, add or delete any custom ringtones you have downloaded and saved to your phone.

  1. 1

Connect your iPhone to the computer using the USB connection cable. This will open iTunes automatically and begin to sync the two devices. If it does not open iTunes automatically, you will need to open iTunes manually. It is not necessary to sync the two devices unless the ringtone you want to delete is not in the iTunes library.

  2. 2

In the left-hand pane of iTunes your iPhone will appear under "Devices." Clicking on the device takes you to the summary tab. From there, select the "Ringtones" tab in iTunes to verify that your device is set to merge and sync all ringtones from your phone.

  3. 3

Check the box next to the option to sync ringtones. Some users will want to sync all ringtones on an iPhone with the iTunes library and other users select the option to customise and select ringtones one at a time. Select the option that fits your lifestyle. Once complete, click the "Apply" button at the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.

  4. 4

In the left-hand pane of iTunes, select "Ringtones" from the library. This will display all the downloaded ringtones that have been synced to your phone. If the ringtone you wish to delete is not in the library, go back to the device in the left panel and sync the phone using the option at the summary tab. Then revisit the "Ringtones" section of the iTunes library.

  5. 5

Right-click the ringtone you would like to delete and scroll down to the delete option on the pop up menu. An alert window will appear asking if you want to remove the selection from the iTunes library that you must confirm before iTunes will remove the file. Once confirmed, the ringtone will disappear from the library.

  6. 6

Go back to the device and summary tab in iTunes and select the sync option. Once the phone has completed syncing, the ringtone will be removed from the phone in addition to being removed from iTunes.

Tips and warnings

  • To keep a ringtone in the library and remove it from the phone only, select ringtones one by one in the ringtones feature for the device. Ringtones that are not selected to sync with iTunes will be removed from the phone.
