How to Configure a Linksys Wag54g2

The Linksys WAG54G2 wireless gateway is a router and DSL modem combined into one device. The Linksys WAG54G2 replaces your current DSL modem, if you have one, as well as your router. The Linksys WAG54G2 includes a wireless router, as well as four ports to connect computers and other devices using an Ethernet connection.

    Turn off your computer and unplug the Linksys WAG54G2 if it is plugged in.

    Plug the telephone cable into the rear of the Linksys WAG54G2, and plug the other end into the telephone wall jack. Plug one end of an Ethernet cable into a one of the open Ethernet ports on the rear of the Linksys WAG54G2. Plug the other end into the Ethernet jack on your computer.

    Turn on both the computer and the Linksys WAG54G2 by plugging the power cable into the rear of the device, and into the wall outlet.

    Open your web browser on your computer and enter "" into the address bar, then press "Enter."

    Enter "admin" in both the "User Name" and "Password" fields when the login screen opens. Click "OK" to log into the Linksys WAG54G2. Once logged in, the "Basic Setup" screen will appear.

    Contact your Internet Service Provider's (ISP) technical support line and request the following information for your network: Encapsulation Settings, Multiplexing Settings and Virtual Circuit Settings. Each network's settings will vary, so it is important to find the settings appropriate for your ISP. Your ISP's telephone number is located on your monthly bill.

    Select the encapsulation method from the "Encapsulation" drop-down menu, then enter the IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway IP Address, Primary DNS IP Address and Secondary DNS IP Address in the labelled fields, as provided by your ISP. Click "Save Settings" once you have entered your settings.

    Click the tab labelled "Wireless," then click "Basic Wireless Security." Enter your desired network name that will be broadcast to wireless devices (SSID), then enter the network key that will the devices will be required to enter in order to gain access to your network via Wi-Fi. Click "Save Settings" to complete the set-up.
