Dry scalp affects almost everyone at some point in their lives, and signs of a dry scalp can include itching and dandruff. Dandruff can become an embarrassing problem when flakes are easily detected on your hair or the back of your clothing. Fortunately for dry scalp sufferers, there are quick solutions to help remedy the condition and restore moisture to your scalp.

Reduce your hair washing during the week. Daily hair washing can strip the scalp of natural moisture. Rather than wash your hair every day, scale back to every other day or less.

Apply oils directly to your scalp. Olive oil, tea tree oil and medicated scalp creams are available from drug and grocery stores. Part your hair, and apply oils or creams as directed to your scalp to help combat dryness.

Reduce dryness in your home because dry air can also induce a dry scalp. Lower the heat in the winter, or position a humidifier in your living space to help your scalp and body retain moisture.

Protect your head during cold weather. Your body and scalp tends to dry out in the winter, so put on a hat before going outdoors to protect your scalp and alleviate dryness.

Use a medicated shampoo. Ask a doctor or hair-care professional for a shampoo to help remedy a dry scalp and treat dandruff. Shampoos for dry scalp are available over the counter and by prescription.

Limit your use of chemical hair treatments and heat. Chemical straighteners and hair dyes can rob your scalp of moisture, as does daily use of blow dryers and curling irons. Air dry your hair, and extend the time between chemical treatments to help restore moisture to your scalp.
