How to locate a phone number by an address
Find a phone number using the person's address. (Number image by LepoTn from

People change phone numbers more easily than they change physical address. A telephone number is a service that people can subscribe to and cancel at leisure. A home, however, is a long-term investment for many. So if you need to reconnect with a long-lost family member or friend, locate the phone number by using the address as a reference. Run the address information through a "reverse address lookup" database online to find the phone number.

  1. 1

Visit the United States Postal Service's (USPS) "Zip Code Lookup--Search By Address" webpage. See Reference 3 for the link.

  2. 2

Type in as much of the address as you have. The street address, city, and state are the minimum requirements to verify the address. The zip code is not required.

  3. 3

Click the "Submit" button and wait for the webpage to advance.

  4. 4

Look in the section labelled, "Full Address in Standard Format," and verify that the street address, city and state match. If the USPS added the zip code, be sure to write that down. If the full address appears on screen, then your address information is accurate. If the USPS's webpage says the information is inaccurate, refer back to the source of the address. Double check your address book, or go back and look at the building number and street sign.

  4. 4

Click on the hyperlink to advance to see the phone number if the webpage does not immediately show it.

Tips and warnings

  • If you don't have a computer, dial 411 from a phone to reach a trained Directory Assistance operator. Inform him that you wish to conduct a reverse address lookup to find a phone number. Also ask him about charges for using this service.
  • Telephone directories are inaccurate because some directories do not update as quickly as others.
