Army fort birthday cake decorating
Transform a simple pound cake into an army fort cake. (just baked crisp cake image by Maria Brzostowska from

An army fort cake is the perfect addition to a military-themed birthday party. You do not have to be a pastry chef to be able to decorate a cake. To save time, start with a baked cake. Using green plastic army figures and a flag on top of the cake finishes the look of an army fort. Prepare this army birthday cake for a twist on a plain iced cake.

Things you need

  • Frozen pound cake, thawed
  • Cake plate
  • 2 cups chocolate cake frosting
  • Spatula
  • 16 lady finger cookies
  • 2 cups toasted coconut
  • Green food colouring
  • 1 cup vanilla cake frosting
  • Green plastic army men
  • American flag toothpick

  1. 1

Place a thawed frozen pound cake upside down on a cake plate.

  2. 2

Spread chocolate cake frosting over the entire cake surface, smoothing it with a spatula.

  3. 3

Press 16 lady finger cookies into the sides of the cake parallel to the plate to create horizontal wooden planks of an army fort.

  4. 4

Combine the toasted coconut and vanilla cake frosting with several drops of green food colouring in a bowl, stirring until the coconut becomes grass green in colour.

  5. 5

Spread the coloured coconut on the cake plate around the fort for grass.

  6. 6

Arrange the green plastic army men on top of the coconut, using the frosting to adhere their feet to the cake plate so the figures stand upright.

  7. 7

Insert the American flag toothpick into the top of the cake to finish the look of the fort cake.
