How to make a model of a robot for kids
Robots are machines that can perform tasks automatically. (robot image by Paul Moore from Fotolia.com)

Robots have been a part of science fiction since the middle of the 20th century. A robot is a machine that can do things for us automatically. For example, a Roomba is a robot that vacuums on its own. Despite the simplistic definition of a robot, most people imagine robots as humanoid machines. Building a model of a robot for kids means building a humanoid robot model. These models can be made of everyday household materials such as empty tissue boxes and empty toilet paper or paper towel rolls.

Instructions

  1. 1

Cut two circles on one side of an empty tissue box using a pair of scissors. Make sure the circle holes are large enough to insert an empty toilet paper roll.

  2. 2

Insert an empty toilet paper roll into each of the circles. Put multipurpose glue onto the holes and onto the end of the roll to attach the roles to the tissue box. These will be the legs of the model robot.

  3. 3

Cut a circle on the opposite side of the empty tissue box using a pair of scissors. Make the circle large enough to insert an empty toilet paper roll.

  4. 4

Insert an empty toilet paper roll into the circle. Put multipurpose glue on both the hole and the end of the roll being inserted into the hole to attach the roll to the tissue box. This will be the neck of the model robot.

  5. 5

Cut a circle into each of the remaining sides of the tissue box that is large enough to hold an empty toilet paper roll. Make the holes closer to the side with the neck than the side with the legs of the model robot.

  6. 6

Insert an empty toilet paper roll into each of the holes made. Apply multipurpose glue to both the end of the roll that is going into the hole and the hole to attach each of the rolls to the box. These will be the arms of the model robot.

  7. 7

Cut a circle into one of the sides of another empty tissue box, preferably a tissue box smaller than the first. Make sure that the hole is big enough that you can insert an empty toilet paper roll.

  8. 8

Insert the neck of the model robot into the hole of the new tissue box. Apply multipurpose glue to both the hole, and the end of the neck that will be attached into the hole.

  9. 9

Spray paint the entire robot using black, silver, or grey spray paint. Allow time for the paint to dry.

  10. 10

Use markers to draw facial features, buttons, lights and other features on the model robot, as preferred.
