We rely on the Internet for everything from keeping in contact with our friends and family to doing our banking to checking the weather movie times. People spend almost as much time on the Internet today as they do watching television. If you are one of those people who can't do without your connection, you may want to connect your PC to the Internet via your Virgin Mobile phone. Virgin Mobile offers a data plan that makes it convenient to connect anytime.
- Skill level:
- Moderately Easy
Things you need
- USB data cables
- Computer with Windows Vista Home
Get a data plan with Virgin Mobile by going to VirginMobileUSA.com. This will allow you to surf the Internet or to use your phone as a modem for your computer. In 2010, it costs between £6 and £9 depending on what type of plan you get.
Buy a USB data cable kit. You can purchase these from your local cellphone store or computer shop or online (see Resources). The kit consists of a USB cable and a piece of software that will allow your phone and computer to communicate with one another. As of 2010 the kits cost between £9 and £19.
Plug one end of the data cable into the bottom of your Virgin Mobile phone and plug the other end into the USB port on your computer.
Turn the power on your computer on and wait for a few seconds. You will get a message from Windows that says "New Hardware Found" and it will ask you if you wish to install the software and drivers for the hardware. Click on "Have Disk," then click "Browse." Put the CD that came with your kit into the CD-ROM drive and click "Next." Wait for a few minutes as your computer installs the drivers. When it is done click "Finish."
Go to the "Start Menu" on your PC, then to "Network" and then to the top tab that says "Network and Sharing Center." Click on it. Choose "Set up a Connection or Network" on the left side.
Go to "Set up a Dial Up Connection." Enter your user name and password. You will get this from Virgin Mobile when you sign up for your data plan.
Type in the phone number. Again you will get this when you sign up for the data plan.
Create and name for the connection and click "Save."
Click on the connection and then click the "Dial" tab. It will take a few seconds for the phone to establish a connection. Once it has established a connection, open your browser on your computer and surf normally.
