Choose a clean, cotton sock to make your sock puppet. Athletic socks keep their elasticity over the long run, and a women's size 7 to 9 sock is a great fit for this project. But you should pick the size sock to match the hand of the puppeteer.
Fit the sock over your hand/arm, with the heel of the sock facing you.
Push the sock material inside the palm of your hand to create the mouth. Your fingertips should be in the toe section of the sock, and your thumb should be in the heel part of the sock. Work the mouth of the puppet a few times to ensure the proper fit of the sock.
Use a light-coloured marker (yellow works well) to dot the spots where you want the eyes. Mark the mouth in a similar way, highlighting enough of the mouth to give an outline of the feature. A dot on the top of the sock where your wrist bends will give you a good idea about hair placement.
Remove the sock from your hand so that you can glamorise your gal puppet.
Making the puppet
Decide what kind of eyes you want. Colourful buttons or fabric scraps make great eyes, and you can sew them onto the sock or glue them. You can also recycle an old piece of jewellery, using gemstones or beads for eyes. Or you can paint exotic eyes directly onto the sock. Make sure that your eyes match up with the spots you've marked on your puppet.
Cut two rectangles of black construction paper, about 5 cm (2 inches) long and 2.5 cm (1 inch) wide. Use scissors to cut straight lines into each rectangle, leaving a 13-cm (1/2-inch) strip along the bottom of the construction paper. These black fringes will be your puppet's eyelashes. Take a pencil and roll each fringe around it to curl the eyelash. Place the eyelash over the eye and cut to fit. Now glue onto the sock.
Use red or pink paint to draw a pretty bow mouth. Don't forget to paint the bottom part of the puppet's lips.
Cut a dozen or more yarn pieces in the length you'd like your sock puppet's hair. Remember, the yarm will be draped over your hand, so take that into account when cutting the yarn. Gather the strings of yarn in the centre, wrap a matching piece of yarn around it and tie into a knot. Stitch or glue the hair on the marked spot. Now you can choose a hairstyle. You can braid the yarn or make pigtails or let the yarn hang straight. You can even cut a few pieces of short yarn and glue to the sock for fringe.
