How to Make a Cat Mask

Doing a fun and easy craft project is a great way to spend time with your children. Make a cat mask to use for a play, a costume or in a dress-up game. Minimal materials are needed, and this easy project can be completed by children of all ages.

Cut the paper platein the shape of a cat's face. Cut 2 obtuse triangles near the bottom of the plate to indicate the jowls and chin of the cat.

Cut 2 triangles from the cardboard as the ears. Staple these firmly to the top of the paper plate.

Create papier mache in the bowl. Mix flour and water until it achieves the consistency of ketchup.

Tear paper into strips of varying sizes. Dip the strips into the papier mache mixture, and cover the head of the cat completely, overlapping the papier mache pieces. Allow the papier mache to dry, which may take several hours.

Cut eye holes once the papier mache is completely dry.

Paint the mask with poster paint. For a cat, black, gray, yellow or orange or some combination of those colors work best. Let the first layer of paint dry completely.

Add features using other colors of the poster paint. Add an inverted triangle for a nose and paint the insides of the ears pink. Let this layer of paint dry completely. You can glue old paint brush bristles to the mask for lifelike cat whiskers, which can be a fun addition for your kids.

Measure a length of elastic to fit the mask around the head. Staple the elastic into place on each side of the mask. Staple the elastic to fit just above the ears.
