How to Mix Hair Dye & Cream Developer

Updated February 21, 2017

Colouring your own hair at home can save you lots of money over the course of a year, but it is important to follow the proper steps to get the best results. A box of hair colour from your favourite store will contain both the dye and a special cream developer. It is important to mix these two properly. If the hair dye and the cream developer are not thoroughly mixed, you will not achieve your desired colour. The results may also appear splotchy and uneven.

Use the plastic gloves that came with the box of hair colour, or use a pair of your own plastic or rubber gloves. Wrap an old towel around your shoulders to protect your clothes. The hair dye and cream developer can stain your skin and your clothes, so it is important to protect yourself.

Squeeze the hair dye solution into the cream developer, making sure that all of the dye is expelled from the bottle.

Replace the cap on the bottle of cream developer and vigorously shake the bottle to mix the contents. Shake several times to make sure that the cream developer and the hair dye are well mixed.

Snip off the tip of the cap on the bottle and immediately apply the hair dye mixture to your hair.
