Making cosmetics at home is economical and fun. By creating lipstick at home, the products and quality of the ingredients can be better controlled. Natural lipstick uses wholesome ingredients that are non-toxic and safe to use on the skin. When making a natural purple lipstick, the colour comes from items found in nature with a purple hue, such as beets or blueberries.

    How to Make Purple Lipstick

  1. 1

Assemble the double boiler. If using a pot and heat-safe bowl, place the pot on the stove and add water. Bring the water to a simmer and place the bowl over the pot.

  2. 2

Melt beeswax in the bowl or double boiler. Beeswax may be grated into the bowl for more even melting.

  3. 3

Remove the melted wax from the heat.

  4. 4

Pour in the castor oil and sesame oil, stirring to combine oils with the melted wax.

  5. 5

Color the mixture using beet juice or blueberry juice. Blueberry juice will impart a purple colour and beet juice may be used to darken the hue and add red undertones.

  6. 6

Pour the mixture into clean containers or jars and allow to cool completely.

  7. 7

Keep the lipstick in the refrigerator since there are no preservatives added.

Tips and warnings

  • When adding juice for colour, mix the lipstick thoroughly before adding more juice. By fully combining the mixture you can assess the colour before deciding to darken.
  • Exercise caution when working with hot items such as a double boiler or melted wax.
  • As there are no preservatives in natural, homemade lipstick, it is more hygienic to use a lip brush to apply the lipstick so that bacteria does not enter the product.
