When the time finally comes to walk across the graduation stage and pick up their diplomas, grads everywhere don the standard cap and gown in preparation for the event. While these garments are intended to make graduates look alike, many graduates enjoy adding accents that set them apart from the rest. By decorating your cap, you can produce a one-of-a-kind headpiece that makes it clear who you are and what you hold dear.

Note to Parent

Many grads wish to send their parents a world of thanks for helping them achieve academic success. Make your graduation cap an homage to the individuals who brought you into this world by placing a simple note atop the cap in a contrasting hue. For example, if you want tell your mom you care, you could place, "Love you Mom," on top of your black hat with white paper. Likewise, if you wish to show your dad how much you appreciate him, you could place, "Thanks Dad," on top of your white hat with black paper.

Pick a Cause

If you hold a political or social cause in high esteem, reference this cause on your hat. For example, if you support breast cancer research, indicate this by placing a pink ribbon on top of your hat. Similarly, if you support ecologically friendly behaviour, place a miniature globe on your hat. Avoid referring to potentially controversial causes, as your school may take offence to you using your graduation attire to support one side in a heated argument.

Foreign Phrase

Show off your foreign language skills or intent to travel by placing a phrase in a different language on top of your graduation hat. Select a phrase or word that deals with education or success, and use paint or peel-and-stick letters to put this term on your hat top. This practice is particularly appropriate if you spent a portion of your school time as a foreign exchange student; placing a phrase in this secondary tongue honours your home-away-from-home.

Floral Delight

If you are a lover of all things green, reflect your love of living plants on your graduation cap. Transform your cap into a floral wonderland by decorating the top with floral buds. Use silk flowers to cover your hat surface. Either place one dominant bud centrally, or spread buds across the hat to create a veritable garden atop your head.
