Take off your make-up before you go to bed. If you leave mascara on overnight, it makes the lashes more susceptible to breakage and leaves them brittle. Be gentle when you take it off and use an emollient made especially for the eyes.
Use a bit of petroleum jelly on your lashes at night to condition them. The petroleum jelly softens the lashes and moisturises them so they don't break off. As new lashes grow in, this makes your lashes look thicker. Some people use Castor oil on their lashes instead.
Make sure you're healthy. Sometimes, a loss of eyelashes result when there's an infection in the eye or eyelid. Mites called demodex folliculorum mites might even infest your eyelashes. Madarosis is also another condition that makes lashes fall out. Even conditions like pituitary deficiency or hypothyroidism cause sparse lashes. If you had long lush lashes at one time and they disappeared, see your doctor.
Get healthy with vitamins. Eyelashes are hair and hair needs certain building blocks to grow strong and long. Take a B complex vitamin to feed the hair. Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid) helps metabolise protein, the material that makes hair and aids in treating anaemia, a condition that causes hair and lash loss. Biotin helps make keratin, the material for your eye lashes. Vitamin A and E help maintain and grow lashes and hair.
Use supplements that contain silica. In addition, potassium, manganese, calcium and magnesium work as a team to make eyelashes grow and iron, copper, chromium and iodine help stop the loss of eyelashes. Use sulphur, zinc, silica and copper to strengthen your lashes.
