If you want to update the software on your German-made, Linux-powered Dreambox set-top receiver, you need to connect it to a PC that's been furnished with Dream Multimedia's DreamUP software. The process of doing so won't require a degree in computer science, but may make you appreciate how quick and easy it is to update the software on your smartphone or tablet.
- Skill level:
- Moderately Easy
Things you need
- DreamUP software
- Serial null modem cable
Install and open the DreamUP software that came with your device on your computer. Then, disconnect your Dreambox from its power supply and connect your modem cable to one of your computer's COM ports. Select the COM port you're using from the drop-down menu in your DreamUP software.
Click on the "Windows" button on your computer, enter "Run" into the search box that pops up and press "Enter." Type "CMD" into the box that appears, press "Enter" and type "ipconfig" into the command prompt window before pressing "Enter" once more (ref. 2). Copy your computer's IP to the "Local-IP (PC)" box in your DreamUP software window. You'll also need to enter your Dreambox's IP in your software's "Foreign-IP (Box)" window. Consult your Dreambox's user guide to find out how to access its IP address. The method for doing so varies by device.
Click on the "Connect" button and reconnect your Dreambox to its power supply. Wait for the flashloader to transfer to your Dreambox and then select the "Flash box" button in your DreamUP software. Click on the software image and hit the "Open" button. Your new software will then be downloaded to your Dreambox. Click on "OK" and then "Exit" when the process is complete.
