  1. 1

Choose your bedding and draperies with elegance and majesty in mind. Luxurious, textured fabrics, such as brocade, velvet and silk will give the room a medieval look.

  2. 2

Select a canopy for your bed. You can use netting, sheer fabrics or heavy, rich materials that coordinate with your draperies and bedding. If you do not have a four-poster bed, you can purchase canopies that attach to the ceiling area via curtain rods, a J-ring or a coronet canopy.

  3. 3

Strive for a medieval, Gothic or Renaissance look in your bedroom. Invest in an old-fashioned fainting couch, a love seat or upholster a window seat area to overlook a beautiful garden or landscaped area.

  4. 4

Use wrought iron or dark, ornately carved wood for your bed frame or in your smaller furnishings, such as the dresser, nightstands or vanity. This will give your room a genteel appearance and enhance the look of a castle setting.

  5. 5

Paint your walls using an opulent neutral colour or use a silver, bronze or gold shade. Alternatively, use a textured wallpaper to give the room an aristocratic look.

  6. 6

Incorporate romantic dimmer switches, electric candelabras or wall sconces that give the appearance of candlelight.

  7. 7

Use many romantic-looking pillows to coordinate with your fainting couch and bed. Lace, tassels, beading and embroidered pillows will give your bed a sumptuous style.

  8. 8

Use rugs in coordinating colours with medallions, fleur de lis or other majestic designs in the pattern.
